Diary kept by Hauterive while serving as the French consul in New York (Oct. 18-Dec. 8, 1803). He comments on details of U.S.-France relations, the activities of Minister Genet, the possibility of France's reoccupying Canada or landing in Florida, prominent Americans, etc. In the final pages, Hauterive takes up his journal again after ten years to reflect on his life and work. Includes typed transcript of the diary.

In 1793, he was appointed as France's minister plenipotentiary to the United States, but his political activities caused the American government to demand his replacement. Alexandre Maurice Blanc de Lanautte, Comte d'Hauterive, was born in Aspres-les-Corps (Haute-Alpes), France, on April 14, 1754. Following his education in Grenoble, he accompanied Comte de Coiseul-Goufier on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1784. Hauterive lost his fortune during the French Revolution and moved to the United States, where he served as French consul in 1792.
